Arrival of Train at the Station Naturalism Roughly 1900-1930 in America Influenced by Darwin, Freud and Marx Encouraged by post-WWI mood of cynicism and amorality Image of man as determined by heredity, instinct and environment Records surface details and below-the-surface details Hollywood’s Classical Realism 1929-1945 – “romantic/idealist” type of realism transparency: erasing itself as it creates itself – immerses audience in characters and their situations thus acception them as real world = homogenous, larger-than-life and idealized the classic happy world with all problems resolved in the end reaffirmation of status quo, patriotism, marriage, heterosexual coupling and very clear dichotomy of good and evil Hollywood Social Realism 1929-1945 – awaking social consciousness in America as a reaction to the Depression has a working class, nitty-gritty quality focuses on interaction of individual and social institution cynical attitude towards social institutions common man as protagonist – worker, society loser smart and tough dialogue players as ordinary “man-in-the-street” looks French Poetic Realism 1934-1940 in the French cinema focuses on working-class, urban protagonist who is alienated and up against class politics and modern industrialization main character is used to a symbolic effect character, setting, poetic dialogue are all built from highly realistic details
