CTCS FINAL NOTES P3 9/20/09 3:24 PM Europe had a great impact on 50s and 60s aAmerican film “Modernism” renaissance in Europe was felt in Ameetrican film, sometimes pure, sometime tinted. Modernist films: sometimes the work has the contours of genre but not much else. Origins: The movement began at the turn of the century in Europe and thus it is a key 20 th century art movement. Modernismaffected all artforms at the beginning of the 20 th century German experessioninsm Avant garde Constructivism Modernism was politically suspect and didn’t get an audience and thus faded until WWII. Neo-realism: dealt with Italians after WWII. Swedish films about loneliness, lack of god in life, communism, black comedy, roman Polanski, labor, people who worked in harsh manual labor. France: new wave, Reaches US shores by 60s and 70s There are 2 tenants of modernism: Every modernist work is a subconscious questioning of all social and moral values. Formal consideration: every modernist text subconsciously plays around with the form or medium that the artist has chosen. o
