Writing 140 / AMST 101 Section 64460 Spring 2009 Assignment 3: The Social Construction of Race Purpose: In Assignment 2 we explored the issues of environmental racism, white privilege, and structural racism, while working on the writing skills of counter-argument and paragraph development. For Assignment 3, we will consider how racial differences are constructed in our society. While considering this issue, we will also focus on the effective integration of outside sources, MLA citation, and introductions and conclusions. Texts: 1) Chapter 4, “Racial Formation,” from Michael Omi and Howard Winant, Racial Formation in the United States: From the 1960s to the 1990s . 2d. ed. New York: Routledge, 1994. (Available on Blackboard) 2) 2-3 scholarly sources on your chosen topic, including at least 1 from the Social Issues course Description: In one of the leading theoretical accounts of race, Racial Formation in the United States from the 1960s to the 1990s , Michael Omi and Howard Winant define race as “ a concept which signifies and symbolizes social conflicts and interests by referring to different types of human bodies ” (55). Like the documentary on race you watched earlier this semester in AMST 101, Omi and Winant argue that racial distinctions are based on abitrary features (“phenotypes”) that have little to no genetic significance.
