8-28-09!! Historical Outline 1. Sumeria was a land of geographical disaster…floods, sand storms, etc., Egypt was geographically stable and predictable 2. Sumerians were pessimistic due to their hardships, Egyptians were optimistic 3. Egypt was second civilization and adapted and improved methods created by the Sumerians 4. Came in 3000 BC when King Menes united Egypt into a country a. Old Kingdom- 3000-2250 BC b. Middle Kingdom- 2050-1750 c. New Kingdom- 1600-1100 BC d. Middle areas were times of trouble e. After 1100 BC, Egypt becomes integrated with other middle eastern empires Importance of Geography 1. Nile river made life possible, without it Egypt wouldn’t exist 2. Nile flows north 3. Source of water 4. Spreads silt onto banks and farmers plant crops in rich soil 5. Everybody lived along nile Tolerance and Rebirth 1. Tolerance of ideas and even of people 2. Scholars are convinced that Egypt was very diverse and they did not care, but they wanted you to become Egyptian (customs, language, etc.) 3.
