Wines: Southern Hemisphere wine regions— Chile and Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa What do these countries have in common as far as wine production goes? Offer some of the best wine values as a result of each of the following: - Favorable climates - Low land and labor costs - High yields - Machine harvested grapes (focus on technology and reproducibility) - Liberal wine laws - Use international recognized grape varietals - Easy to understand varietal labels - Consumer friendly prices What are the laws governing wine production and labeling? New Zealand - Wine Institute of New Zealand (WINZ), 1975 = still developing rules and regional designations - Geographic Indications Act (1994) - varietal = 75% minimum, 85% minimum if exported to US or EU - no restrictions on yields - winemakers have right to acidify, deacidify, enrich, and back blend Australia - Wine & Brandy Corp, 1980 - varietal = 85% minimum, 85% if growing area is listed, 95% if vintage dated - blends = dominant grape must be listed first - “show reserve” = wine has won a medal at a wine competition - reserve bin or bin # = unregulated - acidification is common - chaptalization is illegal South Africa - Wine of Origin (WO), 1973 = wines produced from grapes from a specific region - varietal = 75% minimum, 85% if exported to US or EU, 100% for region or “estate” - certification by WSB - “reserve” = unregulated - production dominated by cooperatives such as KWV = less than 100 of the 4600 growers actually make wine on their premises (estate bottled) Argentina - Instituto Nacional de Viticinicultura (INV) - varietal = 85% minimum - “vino fino” = best wine - few regulations Chile - Denominacions de Origen (DO), 1995 = still developing laws - varietal = 75% minimum
