Sean O’Brien APHG Period 0 08/30/09 Chapter 1 – Thinking Geographically #1) Cartography is not simply a technical exercise in penmanship and coloring, nor are decisions confined to scale and projection. Mapping is a politically sensitive undertaking. Look at how maps in this book distinguish the territories of Israel and its neighbors, the locations of borders in South Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and northwest Africa. Are there other logical ways to draw boundaries and distinguish among territories in these regions? What might they be? There are numerous amounts of ways to draw boundaries for territories. Ways of bounding a territory by human characteristics include grouping by religions, cultures, race, and ethnicity. Also, territories could be bounded by mountain ranges, rivers, forests, etc. For example, in the Arabian Peninsula, territories could be bounded by religion meaning that Muslims would live one place, and Jews or whatever other religions are practiced in this region would live in a different territory. Another way of drawing boundaries would be to place people with a high intelligence level in one territory, people with average intelligence level in another territory, and people with a low intelligence in another territory. Land circumscribed by mountain ranges could be one territory, and desert land could be another territory. #2) Imagine that a transportation device (perhaps the one in Star Trek or Harry Potter ) would enable all humans to travel instantaneously to any location on Earth. What would be the impact of that invention on the distribution of peoples and activities across Earth? A transportation device that could allow all humans to travel to any location on Earth would have
