Lieu 1 Virginia Lieu German R5A September 3 , 2009 The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer In The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer , the subject of the portrait is a young woman standing upright and intently pouring milk into a bowl . By using contrast of light and shadow and alteration of color , Vermeer further emphasizes the milkmaid’s position as the subject of the painting and reveals milkmaid’s inner warmth and kind nature . Vermeer utilizes contrasting colors and textures and the dichotomy of light and shadow when distinguishing the milkmaid from her surroundings . The milkmaid is the only object in the portrait that is painted in vivid colors; her clothes are bright yellow , blue , and red . However , her surroundings consist of beige and brown colors . The long , flowing lines of her apron , skirt , and of the tablecloth in addition to the various items on the table provide a stark contrast to the sharp angled shapes of the footwarmer , window , and wall and to the austere décor of the wall behind her . The light coming from the window is shining directly on her , casting shadows on everything except for the milkmaid and her worktable
