ME303 Paul Laca MathCAD Lab #2 September 1, 2009 The purpose of this exercise is to introduce various matrix/vector components of MathCAD. Items covered include: Matrix/vector operators, properties, vector functions and linear solvers. Note: All lab tutorial submissions must be formatted as specified in tutorial #1 (10 pts). 1. (5 pts) Set ORIGIN = 1. How does this affect matrix/vector specification? 2. (5 pts) Define two matrices, 3. (12 pts) Use keyboard operators or the “Matrix” pallet to determine the following: a. A + B b. B A c. Transpose of A d. Determinants of A and B e. Inverse of A and B f. The products A -1 A and B -1 B. What value should you get ? 4. (8 pts) What happens when you “vectorize” a calculation? Compare B A with B A 5. (10 pts) Calculate the Euclidian condition numbers for A and B . (This is a built-in MathCAD function). Comment on the result obtained in parts 3f , above . 6. (10 pts) Since we suspect that b 2,3 is responsible for the ill conditioning of B . Form a vector function Plot the log [conde( FB )] versus b, for 5 < b < 7, step b = .01.
