ME 303 Applied Numerical Methods Fall 2009 Paul Laca [email protected] Office: HREL 303; Phone: 682-8408 Office Hours: T, R 1:30-2:30 pm Course Background. In current engineering practice most of the problems connected with analysis of complex systems can not be solved analytically and require application of numerical methods to obtain and interpret solutions. Therefore, as a part of education of any mechanical engineer, knowledge of numerical methods is essential. Tools for numerical solutions can be available as commercial software or very often an engineer has to develop solution procedures themselves. Objective: To introduce mechanical engineering students to tools and concepts of Numerical Analysis. MathCAD software will be used during the labs to aid in solution of problems. Prerequisites: Math 285 with grade “C” or better, CS 135 with grade “C” or better. Text Book (optional): Numerical Methods for Engineers and Scientists, 2 nd edition, Joe D.
