How do the bees know to emerge about the time that the palo verdes are flowering? Why do males tend to emerge before females? Why do males dig for females instead of mating with them at flowers or elsewhere? How do the males locate buried females? Why are some males larger than the females? 15 Why do large males dig for emerging females instead of searching for them elsewhere? Hypothesis: Because the first male to reach a virgin emerging female will be the one to fertilize most or all of her eggs. Prediction?
