Collembola ( Coll , glue; embola , a wedge) = springtails; ~4000 species. o Internal moutparts, 6 or less abdominal segments, tail-like appendage o Live in leaf litter or decaying material o Many collembolans attach spermatophore to the substrate then try to nudge females into accepting it o Build spermatophore fences or sometimes “dance” 3. Diplura ( Dipl , two; ura , tail) = two-pronged bristletails; ~500 species. o No eyes, long antennae, unpigmented, series of moults 4. Archaeognatha ( Archeo , old; gnath , jaw) = jumping bristletails; ~25 species. 5. Zygentoma = Thysanura ( Thysan , fridge; ura , tail) = silverfish; ~400 species o silvery glitter of scales covering bodies, fish like movement o silverfish males attach their spermatophores to threads and sometimes tie the females down during mating Pterygota (winged insects) I.
