The Coming of War Long terms causes of war Competitive state system Would compete in everything (economy, money, etc.) Nationalism Made the growing of competitive state system even more dangerous Not enough that your country is the best the other countries have to no badly “my country, right or wrong” Makes it easy to say, “go to war” Became effected by Darwinism Struggle makes something the fittest If nationalism wasn’t so strong and dangerous, war would not have happened Imperialism Quest for an empire Had to have the biggest empire Not just the best, but the biggest Made the tensions greater Helped the nationalism factor By itself it would not have created a war but it created tension with the other factors Trade rivalry Countries would think that other countries were not playing fair because they could not speak the  language of the others, but another country could British thought it was unfair that Germany could also speak English so they could have more  trade Popular journalism Penny press Papers were cheap because it only took a penny to make them Yellow journalism Used yellow paper because it was the cheapest kind of paper Kept people informed about problems  Could read about nationalism, imperialism, the trade rivalry, etc. Ties everything together Militarism Land warfare The machine gun was perfected Two men could control the battle space in front of them for 100’s of yards No one could get pass the machine guns Fire more rapidly More accurate Large shells (more damage) Army is about the industrial revolution Who can produce the best products of the industrial revolution?
