History 1003 April 23, 2009 Nazi’s were always very good at manipulation of opinion. The Ministry of Truth and Enlightenment was over this. “The Big Lie” – the bigger the lie, the more apt people are to believe it. The Kraft Durch Freude (Strength through Joy) program – german workers were forced to work very long hours, but they got small vacations. Peasants – Blud Und Boden. Children (young) – Deutsche Jugend. If anyone went against the government they went before the people’s court: Volkstribunal. The Gestapu was in charge of finding these people. The Gestapu were the state security police. Many of the people who ‘disappeared’ were sent to concentration camps. The government knew something had to be done about the church. Hitler signed an agreement with the Pope Pius XI: The 1933 Concordat in which the Catholic Church agreed if Hitler kept his hands off of the Catholic Church, they would not intervene. In 1937, it was clear that Hitler was not staying away from the Church and the Pope spoke out: ‘With Burning Sorrow’ was the speech in which he spoke out against Germany. After Pius the
