History 1003 10-04-06 The First Scientific Revolution Francis Bacon (1561-1626) Scientific method Inductive reasoning Deductive reasoning Rene Descartes Cogito ergo sum “extended substance” Ptolemy Quintessence Great Chain of Being Copernicus (1473-1543) Kepler (1571-1630) Galileo (1564-1642) Isaac Newton (1642-1727) Mathematical Principles “God as mathematician” Why Then? Really starts in the 16 th century but continues through the 17 th century Renewed interest science Science is not a big interest in the middle ages is b/c science will not get you into heaven But in the end of the 16 th century suddenly a renewed interest in science First off by the 1600s the printing press has been invented Means that if I make a discovery and I get it printed, thousands of people can read it b/c of mass distribution— scientists read it and come up with new ideas or contradict the discoveries The printing press makes it possible to lay discovery on top of discovery Another reason has to do with the Protestant reformation Religion in the late 1500s, religious thought seems not to help people it seems to hurt people
