Counter Revolution - Emperor Ferdinand ruled with martial law until the patent of 1871 o He then appointed Prince Felix zu Schwarzenberg as the head of the government, the prime minister Felix in turn convinced Ferdinand to abdicate in favor of his nephew Francis Joseph, he becomes emperor Felix then appointed Alexander Bach, who set about reforming the legal system He implemented a repressive system known as the Bach system; this was to help get rid of any remaining opposition to the government in Austria o Implemented a lot of spying on neighbors o In March of 1849- dissolves the parliament in Austria, imposing a new constitution This gives no concessions to any non-German nationalities within the empire Restores Hungary to its pre-1848 position o The Hungarian parliament refuses to accept Francis Joseph as emperor and in April of 1849, they declare independence They make Kossuth president of Hungary Francis calls on Russia for help, Tsar Nicholas I Nicholas sent 140 thousand troops to help the emperor out-
