The End of Napoleon - there is a resistance in the places he occupies o german states want to be ruled by the germans, not French - rebellion in Spain - He is in charge of most of Europe- and he takes an ill considered expansion and he decided to invade Russia o 1812- this leads to the destruction of his grand army and it is the beginning of the end for him Russia had agreed to blocking the ports- but they really hadn’t done it; this angers him He thinks if he invades Russia he can take Britain out o June 1812 over 600,000 men invade Russia He wants the people of Russia to fight him in the place that he chooses The Russians keep retreating, drawing him further into Russia His army goes to the town of Smolensk- in August 200 miles west of Moscow- he wanted to force Alexander to sign a really awful treaty and embarrass him o His marshals are a little scared about this o They begged him to stop here Napoleon let his ego override his good sense o Pushes his army forward to Borodino (60 miles from Moscow) o Finally meets the Russians in battle- neither side wins and it is costly Russians retreat again He marches on unopposed to Moscow in September 14 1812
