Chapter 20 BIO 1002 1/29/2008 Chapter 20: Fungi I. Structure a. Mycelium : - the main feeding network of every fungus - May be very large - Usually underground or inside a decaying or living organisms - Composed of a woven mesh of hyphae - Similar to roots of a plant b. Hyphae (sing. Hypha): - the thread like filaments of a fungus - Tubular cell wall containing chitin (chain of glucose, with nitrogen attached) - Surrounds the plasma membrane and cytoplasm c. Chitin : - a structural polysaccharide of modified sugars d. Septa (sing. Septum): - structures which partially separate the cytoplasm inside the hyphae, found in many fungi - keeps a nuclei in each cell, because they cannot pass through, only sugars, or glucose - Connect the hyphae together - Gives off enzymes into the environment e. Spores : - haploid cells which can grow directly into a hypha II. Fungal Lifestyles - Use absorption to obtain their food - 3 variations depending on the food type: 1. Saprobes : - decomposers of dead material (most fungi fall into this group)
