Done by mitochondria 2. Requires oxygen 3. Generates carbon dioxide as a waste 4. ATP (energy) generated during this process B. Respiratory System 1. Requires large, moist surface area 2. Blood and external environment interact 3. Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide 4. Gases dissolve in moisture easier, then exchange II. Evolution of Respiratory System A. No Respiratory or Circulatory System: - Small, thin animals in moist environments (nematodes or flatworms; large, moist external surface areas for gas exchange) - Ex: marine flatworm, sponge B. Circulatory but no Respiratory System - Earthworms have a well developed, closed circulatory system to carry gases throughout their bodies. Still they rely on diffusion in/out of circulatory system through most skin surfaces C. Respiratory and Circulatory system - Don’t need moist exterior, but surface where gas exchange occurs
