The University of Texas at Austin BIO 325L-W Laboratory Experience in Genetics Fall 2009 WRITING ASSIGNMENT #1 TOPIC SELECTION Due date:  Week of September 7 th , in lab Over the course of this semester, you will select and research a topic of your choice, with the  ultimate goal of composing an  8-10 page informative, thesis-based scientific paper.  You should  choose a topic that interests you, so you are willing to live with it all semester and spend a lot of  time reading, thinking and writing about it. The theme of your paper must be related to a topic in genetics  that is of current or recent public  interest (recent means the past 2-3 years).  You should search the public media (including  newspapers and popular magazines, such as the  New York Times Scientific American Discover  and many others).   Wikipedia  and other informative websites like those from medical clinics or  about specific diseases are not acceptable sources for this assignment.  Newspaper and magazine  articles are available for free through the UT library system.  If you are searching through the
