The word comes from the a Muskogee word meaning 'speakers of another language.’ Originated from Southeast region of the US, including North and South Carolina, Kentucky,Tennessee Georgia, and Virginia. History ● “According to Cherokee Indian legend, a “Great Buzzard” flew close to the earth when it was still new, and its tired wings touched the ground in a few places. As the great bird’s wings touched the ground and then rose again, valleys and mountains were created that became the Cherokee land.” - ● Sequoyah- A brilliant scholar created the first Cherokee language, which consisted of a series of letters and some symbols. Which helped the people become one the first tribes to develop a writing system. Trail of Tears ● ● ● ● Indian Removal Act: Forced Native Americans to move remote preservation locations like Oklahoma. Trail of Tears: Nearly, 4,000 Cherokee people died of cold, hunger, and disease on their way to the western lands alone and other tribes were attacked from white settlers. When cross the Ohio river, they had to pay a dollar per head while, the white settler were only charged 12¢. As a result thousands of Native Americans couldn’t pass and froze to death. All of these happened thanks Andrew Jackson because the Cherokee had a somewhat of a peaceful relationship with the government, so they didn’t have to move to Oklahoma but Andrew Jackson didn’t care and forced the out of their land. Symbolism ● The creation story of the cherokee talks about an Owl and an Cougar. The two animals were the only ones who could survive. ● The Owl was thought of as the door to the spiritual world and they also thought that that it would bring medicine to the sick. However, it signified impending death. ● The cougar protected the people because it could see in the dark ● The numbers 4 and 7 recurs throughout stores, politics and myths. For instance “The Earth is suspended from the heavens by four cords, which correspond to the four cardinal directions, north, south, east and west.” ● There are 7 clans just like their are 7 points in the flag and it can also mean a level of purity.
