The label switching idea - MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching). This is basically the same idea as Virtual Circuit Switching in ATM or Frame Relay, except applied to Datagram networks. Uses a label, like a virtual channel number in VC switching, instead of the full source/destination address. As with VC routing, the label is an index for the forwarding table of a router. It allows grouping multiple flows into one label, much as ATM uses a virtual path indicator to carry multiple virtual circuits.
