However, in multiaccess the potential senders normally are not great distances apart (except satellite multiaccess), so they usually form a Local Area Network, or LAN. For this reason, Chapter 4 deals with all kinds of LANs, not necessary all of the broadcast time - some could use switching. In the broadcast LAN, there is one common communication medium Control of this common medium is done by what is called the Medium Access Control (MAC) Sublayer.

ACCESS PROTOCOLS There are a number of general protocols for the broadcast network, listed in order of increasing coordination: 1. Transmit any time. Observe collisions and retransmit if collision. (Called ALOHA protocol.) 2. Listen before transmit. Do not transmit if find busy. This is called carrier sense multiple access
