9.21.2007 – Astronomy Notes Telescopes Two types of optical: reflectors and refractors (use lenses) Because light sources are so far away, the incoming rays are essentially parallel Drawback: requires a lot of technology to balance and keep stable Chromatism Mirrors have to be curved, like lenses. Best shape = parabola Focal length = distance between mirror and the focus point
