Part IV: Chemical Dynamics Thermodynamics and Thermochemistry 1 Thermodynamics: Overview What is thermodynamics? The study of the relationship between heat and other forms of energy Kinetic energy: energy from being in motion Potential energy: energy available based on position or composition What is energy? The capacity to do work or to transfer heat Measured in Joules (J) 2 Thermodynamics: Overview What good is studying thermodynamics? 1. Provides information about a reaction ! spontaneity of a reaction under a given set of conditions 2. Answers questions about reactions ! why do certain reactions occur and not others? ! why do some reactions release heat and other absorb it? ! why do some reactions occur spontaneously and others don’t? 3 Thermodynamics: Overview The 1st Law ! The energy in the universe is constant. ! energy is neither created or destroyed in chemical and physical changes; it just changes forms E universe = E system + E surroundings = constant 4
