Uyen Pham CAT 3 April 29, 2009 WEEK 4 READING SUMMARIES I – Act Without Words I Act Without Words I is based on the Greek mythology of Tantalus, who was punished by standing in a pool of water with a fruit tree above his head. Whenever Tantalus reaches for water, the water lowers, whenever he reaches the fruit, the branches raise up, out of his reach. Thus Tantalus has to spend his life in thirst and hunger, wanting something he can never get. Act Without Words I is a story of a man isolated in a desert that he cannot escape, with water hanging over his head and out of his reach and a tree that closes its branches every time he attempts to come closer. 2 cubes, a rope and a scissors are sent from above. The man tries to use the cubes and the rope to reach for water several times but he always fails. Desperate in thirst and hunger, he attempts to use the scissors to commit suicide but the scissors are taken away from him when he tries to reach for them. The cube is also taken away from him when he sits on it. He eventually decides to give up
