Uyen Pham CAT 3 May 20, 2009 WEEK 7 SUMMARIES I – The Machine Stops Humans in the future invent a machine that controls everything, from everyday life basic needs such as food, drink, bed to traveling, raising kids, and mating. The machine also replaces nature, and humans start to worship the machine and avoid any physical contact with nature by living underground with the thought that the air on the surface of the Earth would kill them. Any human being who attempts to discover the surface of the Earth without permission would be punished by homelessness, meaning death. The Book is the instruction manual for the machine. As people begin to worship the machine, the Book becomes like a Bible in which technology is the religion. As the machine starts breaking down, people at first complain but after a while they start getting used to it just as they get used to live without nature under the machine’s control. The machine suddenly stops working one day, and nobody knows to how to fix it. Riots spread everywhere,
