CASE NO: 200903 (Callie Fora) CONTACT:  William Blankenship, Caitlin Jackson, Britt Williamson, Sarah Wong                     North Carolina State University                     Entomology, Gardner Hall                     Raleigh, NC 27601 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED: 1.  62 Photographs 2.  3 Videos 3. Autopsy report - ENTPD, Raleigh, North Carolina.  4. Vials of preserved insects 5. Maggot motels (reared specimens)  6. Weather data, Raleigh: 18   March – 2   April 7. Deceased -Last seen alive: day, 1 April                    -Corpse Discovered: 1900 hrs, 2 April                    -Autopsy performed: 9 April CONCLUSION:  The estimated postmortem interval (PMI) is minimally 3 days.  This estimation  was taken from the faunal evidence in accordance with the local weather data.  Given that the  weather was slightly colder than known development times the development of the flies may  have been slower, however, it is unlikely that the fauna were slowed by the presence of a  loosely wrapped carcass in a trash bag or light rain during this time period.  The time of death  can be placed somewhere during the day of March 30 th .  The body was found around 1900 hrs  on April 2 nd  and using the known  P. regina  developmental data, the earliest the victim could  have been colonized by this species was late afternoon on the 30 th , however, this species lays  eggs during the morning to mid-day.  A more conservative estimation would be anywhere from 3  days to over a week given the colder weather, but the fly would have still laid eggs during the  daylight hours.  It is important to note that the average temperature for the 8 days leading up  until the body’s discovery was 15.38 degrees Celsius.  The minimum three day estimate is fairly  strong given that the victim was missing from her last few classes and her boyfriend has been
