Ch.2 Evolutionary Psychology talk about whatever your characteristics are that help you survive as a human being… o Look at us a human being’s today o How do we choose our mate o What aggrieve characteristics do we have? o Emphasis important adaptive reproductive, survival of the fitness, shaping our behavior today. o Have longest development before we become independent before we can take care of ourselves and not rely on our parents Genetic foundations of development Pg. 40 shows a cell o Our chromosomes are made up of DNA and DNA is made up of shorter segments called genes. o Human life begins as a single cell and each gene that is a short segment of DNA each segment has hereditary information o if a gene gets turned on is called gene expression if one is turned off and never activated it is? o each gene has its own location and its own designated place on the chromosome o genes are dependent and they are interdependent o the human being has about 20,000 genes, o in addition to genes working together they also interact with things outside the body (the stuff you eat, how much alcohol you drink) they contribute which genes become activate. (lack of sleep) contribute to negative gene expression. o All cells of the body except sperm and egg they all have 46 chromosomes and 23 pairs . o Page 42, figure 3 o The 23 rd pair of chromosomes that determine the sex of the body is the chromosome is XX it is female. If it is XY it is a male o Mom can only give an X, dad can give an X or a Y o Mitosis - splitting and cell division that goes along with every cell in the human body except egg and sperm o Meiosis - the egg and sperm that are created they each only have one set of 23 chromosomes, all the other human cells have 2 paired sets of 23 chromosomes, when fertilization occurs, it creates a zygote which is the fertilized egg and it will have 23 pairs of chromosomes, half of moms and half of dad o Through this process there can be a wide range of what is produced.

o A gene can become mutated which means abnormal change, then that can create a permanently alterd segment of DNA, vulnerable to certain diseases, or someone less vulnerable to diseases o Genotype - every one of these has a range of phenotypes that can be expressed. o Example your dad is a lean mean fighting machine, but instead you aren’t that. o Greatly influenced by environmental factors o Phenotype - what we see what we look at you and observe you. o The existence of dominant and recessive genes o If you have in your genotype a gene that is dominant o You get a gene from mom and dad and one is a dominant gene that one will always be expressed o A recessive will only be expressed under certain conditions Mom little blue eyes, big B brown Dad B b B b BB- brown bB- brown bb- blue baby had to inherit recessive trait from both parents o another way you can get variation in genetic code is sex linked o page 44 figure 4 gives you the names of different disorders and syndromes that are sex linked o this normally occurs in the male, but the mother carries this.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
