Developmental Psychology Chapter 1 o Have notes in notebook Development is also multidirectional as you go through life you’re going to grain and loose skills. Looking at the life span is multidirectional Development is plastic or plasticity what we mean is that our body, brain and personality has the ability to grow and change Lifespan is also multidisciplinary - how the human body grows and develops o He says that looking at development across the lifespan we say that development is contextual meaning we look at what has influence on us on the context of a situation. 3 terms normative age graded influence Normative history graded influence - events that occur relates to history that have an impact on everybody that has happened to. Example baby boomer 1946-1964. Depression and World War II molded how they thought about a lot of things. Something in history that impacts your growth and development Non-normative life events - things that happen to you that don’t happen to everybody. Example your elementary school and your mother dies, or your house burns down. Normative - typical for everybody Non-normative - a typical doesn’t happen to everybody. o All examples of age graded influence o Contemporary issues that have an impact on growth and development. o Health and well-being impact development o Parenting and education Ethnicity - in book definition. NEED o Impact and influence on how you grow and develop SES - ? Social policies - also effect on how your growth and develop Example When she says the term Obama care- piece of legislation called affordable care act. o Technology has had a major impact on lives. o Your biological dimension has to do with your human body, how fast it grows, heat attack, cancer, what has an impact on your development

o Cognitive development - thinking process- cognition - your intelligence your language skills, Socioemotional development o has to do with your emotions, what kind you have, how old you are when they develop, etc. Talk about your personality sense of self.
