Chapter 18: Imperialism Class Notes Reasons For Imperialism To Find new markets for goods. Example: When America's economy was becoming flooded with goods, they branched out into Chind in order to prevent job loss. Prior to 1900, there had been a depression in 1873 and 1893. When there are economic depressions markets tend to branch out. This can also mean getting cheap resources. They wanted to have a strong military to protect the waterways. They also wanted to be able to control the markets. In order to do that, they needed to assert their power. Power, within this context was they navy. The United States wanted to be more like the European nations in order to gain respect/prestige. They wanted to be able to have influence internationally. This directly applies to US relationships with European nations. They wanted to go to take over other countries (military, economically, political, etc) using religious justification. They used the idea of conversion to expand. Ideas like Social Darwinism promote this. When business people wanted their businesses, they got politicians involved. Josiah Strong who is a congregationalist minister, thinks that nearly all he liberties in the world belong to the Anglo-Saxons. He thinks that they have been chosen by God to expand.
