Lecture 10-The Urinary System Thursday, November 15, 2018 9:20 PM The Urinary System Functions o Regulates plasma ion concentrations (Na+, K+, Cl-) o Regulates blood volume and blood pressure o Helps to stabilize blood pH o Prevents the loss of valuable nutrients o Eliminates organic matter/waste (urea) o Synthesizes calcitriol (active form of vitamin D) o Prevents dehydration o Aids the liver with some of its functions (detoxifying poisons) o Produces urine o Transports urine toward the urinary bladder o Temporarily stores urine proper to elimination o Conducts urine to exterior; in males, transports semen as well The Kidneys o The right kidney (covered by the liver, right colic flexure and duodenum) o The left kidney (covered by the spleen, stomach, pancreas, splenic flexure, and jejunum) (positioned higher than the right kidney) o Both capped with the suprarenal glands

The Nephron Basic structural and functional unit of the kidney Renal tubule: long tubular passageway Main functions: o Reabsorbs useful organic material from the filtrate (urine processing) o Reabsorbs more than 80% of the water from the filtrate (prevents dehydration) o Secretes waste into the filtrate that was missed in an earlier process (urine processing)
