2DIABETES AMONG HISPANICSDiabetes among HispanicsFort Smith is the second largest city in Arkansas with a population of roughly 86,000 inhabitants. There is 68 square miles of City limits and is home to the U.S. Marshal’s Museum. Fort Smith lies on the border of Arkansas and Oklahoma, the thing that separates the two is the Arkansas River. According to the United States Census Bureau the population of Hispanics in Fort Smith is 18.8%. Also, the median household income in 2017 was $36,532 and 25.8% of residents lived at or below the poverty line. These numbers were shocking to discover. That means that 1 in 4 residents are below the poverty guidelines and I wonder how many of those arenot able to afford proper medical care.In the United States there is a total of 30.3 million people or 9.4% of the total population that have diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017).
