Background Man has always been dependent on light energy from the sun since the beginning of time. However, as the day ended and night came, the early man was forced to reside in total darkness. This later came to change with the discovery of fire by Homo erectus about 1 million years ago. The discovery of fire revolutionized the life of man as it had diverse uses right from cooking, heating to its use for lighting. 4
