ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP 2 Organizational Leadership Patient and family centered care improves many aspects of hospital performance, including quality and safety, regulatory hospital survey scores, financial performance, patient outcomes, and employee retention and satisfaction. As a model of heath care where patients are seen as partners and collaborators in the care they receive, much emphasis is given to the patient’s experience. As a way to focus more on patient and family centered care, organizations are implementing patient advisory councils to identify patients’ needs and improve the health care experience. Business Practices Improving patient care is not only the right thing to do; it also makes for good business. With great emphasis on patient and family centered care (PFCC) and the patient experience, health care organizations receive both incentives and penalties based on the patient’s perception of the care they received in the hospital. According to the Health Research & Educational Trust (2013), implementing a PFCC approach directly impacts a hospital’s business by reducing cost of care by improving efficiency, preventing unnecessary readmissions related to increased adherence to recommended treatment plans, improving patient satisfaction that directly correlates to reimbursement rates from Medicare and other payers, and identifying patient care opportunities to be addressed in real-time. Engaging with patients and families as partners in care allows for the identification of solutions to improve efficiencies that drive down costs, increase staff satisfaction and employee retention, and develops loyal customers that spread positive word of mouth to family and friends. Regulatory agencies provide oversight of healthcare organizations to ensure all patients receive the best healthcare possible. Regulatory agencies, such as The Joint Commission (TJC),

ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP 3 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), and other state and federal agencies support PFCC through recommendations and standards that promote patient care and safety. Health care organizations use these regulatory requirements as a framework to support innovative approaches to quality improvement, healthcare accessibility, and affordability. Part of TJC review process evaluates the systems in place to ensure the timely, accurate exchange of patient information while respecting the rights of the patient to participate in their care. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (2017), nurse bedside shift report is one strategy to involve the patient and family as an essential partner in the health care team.
