Spinoza o Bible facts Read bible with an open mind History-authorship We are not 100% certain who wrote the bible What are the author’s intentions? What is the author’s background? How many authors are there? What time the book was written in? Don’t interpret yourself! Pure interpretation; reading into the text o Let the text speak for itself Read text with an open mind/clean slate o “listen to the texts rationality” read it in the original language; no translation o already an interpretation o biblical Hebrew Difficulties Lots of ambiguities in the language (prepositions) o Ex: ‘C/Ki Multiple meanings o No punctuation Ezra (many authors) (after torah) o Spinoza used some of Ezra’s for some of the books o Ethics Geometrical method God or nature Substance = god or nature o Understood through itself o It exists to exist o Nothing needed to understand it There is only one substance (god), and substance is everything Substance is self-caused o Essence = existence; necessarily exists Modes : modification of substance in a finite way
