Pat Flanagan Houlihan - Essay #4 - Eng 1102 11-19-07 Proportionality of Athletes Shuts Down Programs In John Irving’s essay, “Wrestling with Title IX,” he talks about how Title IX is enforced and why part of it is unfair to men: “What is unfair is not Title IX---it is Title IX’s enforcement of proportionality, which discriminates against men,” (197). I completely agree when Irving says this because I also think that Title IX has some good points; however, I believe that the proportionality part of Title IX goes against the whole point of the law. The point of Title IX is to ensure equal opportunities for both male and female athletes. Also, if the proportionality part of Title IX is not applied to other areas of schools such as classes, then why should it be applied to sports? One part of Title IX that I do agree with is the part about proportionality of funds. I believe that funding for male and female athletic teams should be dispersed proportionally based on the number of teams and athletes for each gender. Giving equal amounts of money according to the proportionality of male and female teams will make it fair to both sides of the equation. Giving equal proportions of money to each gender according to their proportionality of teams will allow each team to have the same amount of money. As long as they each have the same amount of money there should be no complaints from either side. Although proportionality of funds is an important step to equality, proportionality of gender is not. Different proportionalities of males and females want to compete in collegiate sports.
