HIST-200 Lecture 2/26/2007 Antebellum North Industrialization raises the question of urbanization: not quite sure which came first, mutually dependent Urbanization - Cities grow too fast - Common set of problems o Lack of sanitation City dwellers tossed garbage into the street Polluted the earth water Hogs roamed the city o Diseases like cholera, typhoid fever, malaria o Start to realize that polluted water results in disease, start to clean up water o Slums o Poverty o Crime Stemmed from lack of “whiteness”: Irish Every city has its street gangs o Saloons Hard-drinking society o Houses of prostitution o No uniformed police forces until the 1850s o Firefighting companies (volunteer enterprises) Uniformed firefighting companies emerge in the 1850s - But there are positives o In the cities, cultural activities Theaters Art galleries Libraries Concerts Shakespeare Almost all of nation’s writers in the cities Schooling in the city is better and more consistent
