MUSC 423 Lecture 10/6/2008 Bob Dylan - He’s an enigma o One thing he does well: write lyrics Early lyrics: was accused of stealing Bob Dylan - Born: 1941 - Birth name: Robert Allen Zimmerman o Changed his name legally to “Bob Dylan” in 1962 (was 21 years old) Changed it in honor of Dylan Thomas? Dylan replied, “No. I just like the sound of “Bob Dylan.” o Always a trickster when asked questions. Hated reporters. Always insisted that he wasn’t a folk singer. - Was not a very good guitar player… nothing stunning. o But, he was a phenomenal harmonica player. He dumbed down his harmonica playing in his songs. - Had fascinating, timeless lyrics - Song: “Blowing in the Wind” o Bob Dylan From his 2 nd album: The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan 1 st album: Bob Dylan Discovered in New York by John Hammond Discovered Bennie Goodman, who was the “King of Swing” - Song: “Blowing in the Wind” by Peter, Paul & Mary
