George Frideric Handel - Time-Line 1685 Baptized as Georg Friedrich Händel in Halle (in present-day Germany). 1702 Attends University of Halle. Appointed organist at the Calvinist cathedral. 1703 Moves to Hamburg. Starts as a second violinist at the Opera. Later becomes a harpsichordist and composer there. 1706 Leaves for Italy. Travels there, composes many important works in Rome, Florence and Venice. 1710 Appointed Kappellmeister to the Elector of Hanover. 1710-11 Spends eight months on leave in England. His opera Rinaldo is a great success. 1712 Travels to London on another "leave." 1717 Enters the service of the Earl of Carnarvon (later Duke of Chandos)
