It is not uncommon for some engineering and science students to believe that they don’t need to mess with all this stuff about management theory and management skills. But the reality is that most career paths in engineering and science require a transition from “mainly technical” to “mainly managerial”. If you are one of the (very) few who never assumes management responsibilities in your career, you will be managed by others. So it makes sense that you at least understand how you are, or should, be managed as an employee. 2

Planning is the #1 important management function. It is where we determine what the organisation is doing (or should be doing) and why. Everything else should follow from the planning function. Why is planning the most important function? Consider this: if we don’t know what we are or should be doing, how can we know what resources we need? And how can we measure whether we are achieving what we want to? 8

The organising function is all about resources for the organisation. Don’t forget that humans (employees and contractors) are resources too – that is why most companies have a “Human Resources” department. 9
