Not always obvious to important to consider is that management theories have been continually evolving and updated/replaced. The foundations of most management theories are only about 100 years old. But since then we have extensively improved our knowledge of management. In the last thirty years there has continued to be a significant evolution of management theories. This is necessary since the nature of work has changed considerably in the last thirty years For example we have shifted significantly toward an information based thirty years For example we have shifted significantly toward an information-based economy rather than an emphasis on production (via manual tasks). 2

If there is no purpose to you organisation existing, should it? Or if your organisation is unable to progress further toward its current goals and objectives, should it rethink its goals and objectives? For example, in the last decade Kodak has almost-abandoned the chemical-based film and photography business and shifted to digital photography as demand from consumers shifted from film photography to digital photography. This has been a tremendous change since Kodak traditionally was a chemical and chemical-treated products manufacturer. Now it is primarily a high-technology manufacturer of electronic digital imaging systems and equipment. Earlier this year, Kodak announced that it will cease production and sales of its once popular Kodachrome colour film. Nationally, the manufacturing sector of Australia’s economy continues to shrink due to continual pressure from overseas manufacturing locations. Earlier this year Pacific Brands announced that it will cease local production of the Bonds brand of socks and undies and offshore the manufacture to overseas factories. 4
