Recall from the first lecture that prescribed waste as defined by the EPA Act is primarily hazardous waste produced as the by-products of industrial processes used for the production of goods and services. The universal term for waste with a potential to cause harm to humans and/or the environment is hazardous waste. In Australia the legally definition commonly used is prescribed waste. 2

Universally the three core elements of waste management. Reduce, recycle (and reuse), and disposal. The first preference is for reduction, and if possible elimination, since less waste generated means less to manage. Second preference is recycling or re-use. Last preference is disposal. This means the waste material must be stored or placed in the environment. For hazardous waste this may involve treatment or further processing prior to storage or disposal. 3
