Social learning (modeling) or learning through observation There is a language that is used to help understand some of the basic principles. There is an observer and a model (or the observed) Basic principles: Observers’ behaviors can be affected by the direct consequences to a model When the observer’s behavior is increased by watching a model be (directly) reinforced, the observer’s behavior is vicariously reinforced When the observer’s behavior is decreased by watching a model be (directly) punished, the observer’s behavior is vicariously punished

Social learning (modeling) or learning through observation Additionally, an observer can learn simply through observation (cognitive mechanisms are involved) Although there may be no direct interaction or direct participation at all, the observer can learn an activity—this is termed covert rehearsal

Social learning (modeling) or learning through observation The model also makes a difference in the strength of the social learning, that is, some models are more effective than others Similarity of the observer and the model is important (especially with respect to diffuse status characteristics like sex category)—observers are more likely to model those who are similar, other things being equal --Resources of the model are important—observers are more likely to model those with more resource, other things being equal
