The Civil War brought many trials to the nation, the nation as a whole was a mess after the war. Although the slavery issue had been resolved through the war, African Americans were still heavily persecuted. They faced many obstacles which lead to limitations socially, politically, and economically. African Americans were treated as social outcasts. Jim Crow laws separated the African Americans from the whites. Segregation meant that an African American person couldn’t use the same restroom as a white person, and it was the same for many other public places. Real estate agents even prevented them from buying houses in certain neighborhoods. This is when they term ‘separate but equal’ was coined. They may have been separate, but this was certainly not equal. Everywhere they went they faced segregation and discrimination, it did not matter if the moved out of the South, these issues were prevalent across the nation.
