The Land New Zealand lies in the southern Pacific Ocean, 1600 km east of Australia. It is made up of the North and South Islands and a number of smaller islands, with a total area of 268 000 sq km. Even though New Zealand is located in the South Pacific, it can be far from tropical. New Zealand’s weather is actually extremely variable – commonly described as “four seasons in one day”. Weather conditions also differ depending on which part of the country you are in. The north of the North Island is sub-tropical – with warm humid weather. The south of the South Island, on the other hand, is the first port of call for Antarctic blasts. Mountain ranges and hill country dominate NZ's landscape; one of the most striking physical features is the Southern Alps. These, along with fiords glaciers and lakes and the coastal plains of Canterbury and Southland add to the variety
