Problem Set 4 1. Find the oxides commonly used as an insulator in the integrated circuit industry at present. The insulator materials are usually referred as low-k materials. Explain what low-k means. (hints: Google search) 3. Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) may be operated in two different modes: distance-controlled and current-controlled. Please read the STM references given in the class, and find how these operation modes work, and what they are good for. 5. Using the thermal energy at 298.75 K as the kinetic energy of a helium atom, calculate the de Broglie wavelength and the position of the first diffraction peak from a grating with d =100 nm. 7. (Optional) In the class, we see the STM image of the 2D free electron gas confined in a quantum corral. A simple model for this observation is the free particle in a deep circular 2D well. Can you solve the Schodinger equation for the model?
