Desai 1 Vaidehi Desai Ellen Anagbo English 0711 3 rd October 2018 Crawford’s Persuasive Elements for English Plus James Crawford, President of the Institute for Language and Education, in his speech “Official English Legislation: Bad for civil Rights, Bad for America’s Interests, and Even Bad for English” argues that 'Instead of “English only... English Plus”. It’s an idea that promotes the use of English along with other languages. The belief to let English language and America grow as they have in the past, complimenting growth and adding to the story of success both at the national and international stage is discussed in the entire speech. America needs 'ethnic bilingualism' as a step to grow. It needs well developed skills in English, Plus the other languages too. Crawford’s verbalization is efficacious which is evident through his organization and is reflected through his clear, focused and logical argument along with the setting of his tone. Not only Crawford is convincing, but he is an excellent presenter and writer. It can be justified based on the organization of the essay. The genre of the essay is speech. It is also a classic example of persuasive writing. The first two paragraphs set the formal tone of the speech and also introduces the audience. It adds to the gravity of the topic, namely, “English Legislation: Bad for Civil rights...Bad for
