Sociology Notes 17:47 Deviance Goes against the norms or values of the society you live in or subcultures of  the society Can be negative or positive according to the group you live in Defined as behavior, beliefs or conditions that are viewed by powerful  segments of society as serious violations of important norms Four characteristics o 1. Relative varies from one culture to another. How we react. o 2. Audience is very important: front stage and back stage; are you conforming?:  place your doing the behavior o 3. Deviance is historical or time limited: against the law for a woman to show her  ankles o 4. Depends on the actor: same behavior can be deviant depending on who’s doing the behavior With deviance o Age is important Young girls showing too much skin, old people showing too much skin  etc o Gender is important o Race/ethnicity is important
