The function of the epigram included in the beginning of the essay was to prepare the
readers for a more in depth view point of the nature beyond mother Earth. It relates to the essay
as Sagan discusses about the cosmos, the universe, and the life beyond Earth. The author talks
about how our perceptions are limited because of the small fraction of the universe that we see.
He describes what science really is to prepare his audience for an expanded view of nature.
Writers use many literary techniques in their writing, one of the most important one is
Polysyndeton, a repeated use of coordinating conjunction to connect different items in a
sentence. The repetition of the conjunctions increases the importance of the words, and creates a
