1 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL PROBLEMS WORKSHEET Introduction to Social Problems What is a social problem? According to author Thomas J. Sullivan, “A social problem exists when an influential group defines a social condition as threatening its values; when the condition affects a large number of people; and when the condition can be remedial by collective action.” (Sullivan, p. 3, 2016). The social problem I will be focusing on is drug addiction. Drug addiction affects around 19.7 million Americans, from age twelve and above. Some factors that can influence substance abuse is genetics, environmental factors, and mental health disorders (Thomas, 2020). Drug addiction is a big issue in our society because it is not only just affecting adults, but it is also affecting children. As a teenager and an adult, one may be exposed to these substances at parties or social gatherings.
